Vision
A public charter school sponsored by Douglas County School District, Sierra Crest Academy will enable its students to.
. .
Be enthusiastic and involved in their everyday learning experiences.
Interact with their peers and teachers to develop their social and work skills.
Demonstrate a personal responsibility for themselves, their actions, and the outcome of their choices. Project-based learning
depends on rigorous self-discipline and self-examination and not excuses.
Our parents are an integral part of the student's education and are involved in field trips, student store, fundraising, tutoring,
and community networking to enhance student projects. Without every parent being accountable, there are no role models for
students being accountable. Parental accountability and personal involvement provides the best role models for students accountability
and personal investment.
Purpose
We invite students to reach their highest potential through an environment that facilitates parents, teachers, and students
working together and simultaneously involving themselves in a sustainable community.
Our private school atmosphere and all our teachers are great. Gifted students can pursue their interests while 'at risk'
students might encounter their gifts and talents for the first time. Profoundly gifted students will be mentored through The
Davidson Institute for Talent Development in Reno and our Opportunity staff. Our many programs for students include Scientific
Learning's complete array of products (see www.scilearn.com). Also offered to the community as a school fundraiser, these
programs encompass Kindergarten reading improvement to adult speech and comprehension programs by our speech and special ed
teachers and aides. We are pleased to announce the expected academic goals were exceeded our first year of operation. However,
we monitor other measures of student performance, as you can read in our charter.
Students from anywhere may enroll in this free public charter school. Our census has included students from Carson City,
Douglas, Washoe, and Lyon counties, attending with car pool assistance.
We are currently in our fourth year of operation, enrolling students in grades 7 through 12th for the fall 2008 term. 12th
grade enrollment is only available to students who have mastered our project-based format by attendance in 11th grade at Sierra
Crest Academy. Early enrollment is encouraged to avoid wait lists. Our next informational open house is Wednesday May 28
from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The event will include facility tours, opportunities for Q & A with current board members, staff,
active parents and students. Refreshments will be served.
Our Mission is to promote student achievement and enable students to become competent,
contributing members of society equipped with reading, writing, computational, technological and problem solving skills necessary
for success in a rapidly changing world.
